I think the most probable cause of ALS is a pesticide, neurotoxin, teratogen, organic solvent and poison in common use both in and out of the military: 2-butoxyethanol or some type of glycol butyl ether (the one I know best is Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether) It causes symptoms like those of 'gulf war syndrome' and you would see the same thing in other war eras. Civilians would call 'the pattern' of health changes Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction syndrome, CFS, FM, ME. It should be suspect for causing Autism, and for the primary harm to Vietnam & Korean Vets and today's vets, too. The proof is the AIHA or IMHA that doctors can't find in CFIDS. That's because medical science holds to wrong medical theories: such as very high white blood cell counts are either an infection or lymphoma. For this group they are an anemia sign. LOOK at the RED blood cells. Exposure looks like 'the flu' What was different right then? (Not a virus ... a chemical exposure for these)
