1. Protect Yourself From Future Harm!

    Check for what products contain 2-butoxyethanol
    (CAS Registry Number: 000111-76-2)
    in the Household Products Data Base
    http://hpd.nlm.nih.gov/ingredients.htm
    or check on the internet.

    I note that the paint companies, Fuller O'Brien, in particular, are now putting good warnings on their paint, whereas previously you couldn't find the harmful ingredient, or adequate warnings for such.  They are concerned, I believe, about a suit for Negligent Failure to Warn after the past 10 years of lawsuits re:  lead in paints.

    Exposure is not ingestion, however, as much as it is getting the vapors in one's eyes.  It is not JUST kidney failure, but a host of issues that can start up at the same time.

    Clean Shower does not disclose any ingredients

    Some Ideas shared by a Pro in the Field of Product Development:

    If you have two employees, you have to post or have easy access to MSDS for all products the employees will use. This includes one or more maids who clean in your home - you must obtain MSDS for Clorox, Tide, Spray N Wash, silver polish, Windex, etc. If you use it yourself, then you are entitled to screw up and kill yourself, by accident, for not reading the label - but woe betide you if your employee mixed ammonia and Clorox and gets fatally ill and you did not OFFER MSDS for the products. Of course if you have them available and nobody reads them - hey that is their problem (unless you have 50 employees and then you are required to have a safety officer and give seminars to be sure they ARE educated).

    Incidentally, you tell the companies that you have an employee and OSHA requires you to have an MSDS on hand and they MUST GIVE YOU ONE - BY LAW. If not, call OSHA and tell them who would not give you an MSDS. Now nothing says the MSDS has to be well written or even accurate, but they must have one and they must give it to YOU, if asked.

    Once you have the MSDS, call the help phone number and tell them your dog drank the stuff, so what should you do, or your kid took a bath in it and is screaming. You can learn a LOT that way too. Not exactly ethical, but its one way to learn. By the way, you did not get this harebrained idea from ME. Unh unh - not me.

    Use proper precautions - Wear air tight goggles!

    That's one of the main problems. Painters and brick masons (at the cleaning phase) ... moms cleaning at home. Many people are exposed to 2-butoxyethanol in too strong a concentration and they do not protect their eyes. Even the warnings are inadequate. Paint cans have started to say to not ingest ETHYLENE GLYCOL as it causes kidney damage (That's not all it does; and when I asked Fuller O'Brien, they wouldn't even tell me WHICH ethylene glycol) Of the 740 varieties, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether is the #1 most commonly used.

    Passing through the grocery check stand last month I noticed how tired the bagging employee looked & commented on it. His eyes were red and bloodshot. He said, "Oh, I work two jobs, my other job is painting at Dunken 'n Bush" Well, I said YOU MUST NOT GET THOSE PAINT FUMES IN YOUR EYES. Go to the auto store & get some air tight goggles ... or go get some swimming goggles. YOU MUST NOT GET THOSE FUMES IN YOUR EYES. Want to have children some day? Want to stay healthy yourself and not come down with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

    They make a brief comment on such in this classic LA news article on the worker 'protective equipment' (or lack thereof)

    Last young man that I spoke to in this same job said, "Oh, he'd come down with diabetes" (Uh, huh???) at 25 & with these chemicals in his profession, it is more than likely 'endocrine disruption' from 2-butoxyethanol; but all that is noted is that they have high blood sugar. (Often times high blood pressure; horrible headaches, the works) And other related health changes and metabolic problems

    Robin shared these concerns  robin

    2-butoxyethanol main entrance is thru the eyes and cuticles

    "We were told by the clinic that what we had was a virus."

    (Note: Mouth ulcers is one symptom of overexposure to chemicals)

    Actually there's lots more wrong with me than just my eyes: robin

    my personality totally changed! Others will so affirm!
    I can be talking in mid sentence, and forget what I was going to say. (Doctor calls it short term memory loss)
    my blood sugar goes sky high; I need a pancreas transplant;
    my child was born with multiple heart defects;
    bone problems - several discs in my back
    nerve problems, no feeling in knee, foot, hand
    problem with the small bowels and more....

    "I've been to Mayo clinic several times; doctors don't know what's caused this."

    Update: Had pancreas & spleen removed May 5, 2003 (awaiting a transplant)
    I firmly believe that there are a lot of 'heart attacks' and 'stroke' diagnosis for this group of people who actually die from the rapid heart beat or collapse from lack of blood from the autoimmune hemolytic anemia that underlies all the other health ailments.

    In the FDR documentary, they made no mention of his dying of a stroke, but the other things such as headache and collapsing after an acute headache such as had become very frequent. Experts have gone back into the information available and declared that he was in clinical depression at the time he was meeting with Stalin in February, 1945. The pattern of this chemical's harm is here, that's all I can say. Since the President and the Pope are carefully watched and their activities logged, you may find the source of this chemical exposure in each case.

    I wrote to Johns Hopkins University and complimented them on their pioneering in open heart surgery for the 'blue baby project' and asked if they would be interested in researching this chemical's harm. We would have a lot fewer babies born with congenital heart defects (& need fewer surgeries, therefore) if this chemical weren't harming our children) Fewer, 'strokes' and 'heart attacks' as well.
