i started this brain tumor, trip years pre dx, being dx with a gazillion autoimmune disease--most have been addressed through lifestyle diet, and changes in life habits and functions.  still some minor issues remain.
 
the link came from a gf, un dx with anything clear, going nuts for years with variety dx--lymes, bells palsy, neuropathy issues, thyroid mass, we think she's been having regular seizures, though her dr says "if she didn't void herself or lose consciousness, it wasn't a seizure--which is bull.  already been hospitalized for 2 seizures and seems to be having a few seizurey episodes daily, neuropathy weirdness, etc.
 
and is on her own trying to figure it out.  went through many variety treatments, conventional and new unknowns, to address the lymes, but its a clinical dx, not proven fully, and she just got worse.  being off treatments she is doing better, but seizure and other neuro symptoms have come back full force.  while all the extras that made life hell, stopped when treatment was stopped.  she also was just started on b-12.  i have pernicious anemia and explained that if she lacks intrinsic factor, she can eat as much b-s as she likes and its trash.  started the shots 2 weeks ago.
 
real complicated case.  we research together a lot.  just not much help in the dr arena for her type of case.

I say listen carefully to what you body says ... when flu symptoms show up, or even just sniffles ... diarrhea ... I think that is the exact time to look into what is different.  Someone new come around (were they overexposed and breathing the chemical out in their respiration ... to expose someone nearby ... as the particles can get into someone else's eyes and expose them second hand)
 
What do you and your friend do for employment?

I've had several serious flu-like episodes.  One was when I was 10.  It lasted for 3 weeks.  Consisted mostly of vomiting.  The other was very much like mono.  Aches, pains, severe fatigue, swollen glands, etc.  The lyme doc I saw said it was probably the beginning of my infection.  The holistic doc I saw said it was probably the triggering event for my CFS.  Frankly, I don't buy into either of those dx's.  I've had to have had other flu-events but can't think of them right now (memory isn't what it used to be).
 
White count is normal, but granulocytes tend to be slightly elevated and lymphocytes tend to be slightly low.  Other than that, CBCs look pretty good, even by my standards (never mind what the docs say).
 
Fatigue is my primary symptom and has been for a few years now, along with both short- and long-term memory loss.  There are chunks of my life I can't remember anymore.  Have quite the list of neuro symptoms including cognitive problems, problems with balance and coordination, some loss of fine motor skills, tremors, possible seizures, headaches of every size and color, sleep issues, and I can't remember what all else.  There's a joke in there somewhere.
 
Neither parent has a dx'd autoimmune illness, although my maternal grandfather did (Reynaud's and RA).  All my antibodies tests have been negative.  Negative ANA, negative thyroid antibodies.  I do have some immunoglobulin anomalies (low IgA and IgG3, very low IgG1), but nobody can tell me what they mean.  I have thyroid nodules (possibly cancer), maybe Reynaud's, adrenal fatigue, iron/vit d deficiencies (working on those), currently in perimenopause, and that's pretty much all I've been dx'd with (besides the two previously-mentioned bogus dx's).
 
Dont' know what else I can add.  My docs just look at me and shake their heads.  Most testing has been negative and I've had a boatload of testing.  If you'd like the list, I'll send it.

Just the flu episodes you can remember would be enough to cause serious health issues such as Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (which would encompass the ailments you list, including thyroid)
 
If exposure to BUTYL is VERY serious, people can die,
such as the 3 soldiers that died after flu-like symptoms 2005
 
 
 
Some thoughts to a son of a man with serious health issues,
which I interpret differently than those who focus only on BT
 
Most important thing to focus on is accurate diagnosis of the fatigue

Remember that one issue is counteracted by another when more than one thing is going on wrong at once
 
Do you have a doctor who is interested in trying to figure this out?
 
The same old approach will not work
 
There was a man in our town who had the anemia diagnosis,
as in his case it was sudden, and very obvious ... not the slow perking variety
 
& he later came down with NHL
 
The blood specialist he saw put him on
Rituxan and he is now in remission from the anemia and the cancer
