Dispersants add poison to gulf waters

After ethylene oxide found in Corexit, the WORST component is the large amount of 2-butoxyethanol (a glycol ether)

DATA

This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to the water environment and aquifer.

Comments MSDS of 2-butoxyethanol :  "DANGER! HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED, INHALED OR ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN. CAUSES EYE IRRITATION. AFFECTS CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, BLOOD AND BLOOD-FORMING ORGANS, KIDNEYS, LIVER AND LYMPHOID SYSTEM. COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID AND VAPOR. MAY CAUSE IRRITATION TO SKIN AND RESPIRATORY TRACT."  Material Safety Data Sheet,   etc*

Why aren't products that contain 2-butoxyethanol not listed at a higher than moderate health risk?  *

I conclude dispersants should NEVER be used,

they came into vogue based on false premises...

& all we do is add poison to our waters...

EPA Tell BP To Stop Using Dispersant  Several versions of Corexit were tried out in the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup. After ethylene oxide, the worst component at 38% strength is 2-butoxyethanol (a glycol ether) The Material Safety Data Sheet on this component says to not put it in the water: "This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to the water environment and aquifer." It should also be rated higher than moderate health risk for people, too. Find out what happened to the 1000 young men on the 'bioremediation experiment' and the US Coast Guard who monitored it, * and you will find that they look like 'gulf war syndrome' vets & like civilians with Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome, CFS, FM.  Dispersants should NOT be used. All you are doing is adding poison to your water.

30-60% 2-butoxyethanol

and up to 5% propylene glycol  *

plus 'proprietary' 10-30% organic sulphonic salt

what someone has to say about it:  *

What are the glycol ethers?  *  *

Glycol: any of a class of organic chemicals characterized by having separate two hydroxyl (-OH) groups, contribute to high water solubility, hygroscopicity and reactivity with many organic compounds, on usually linear and aliphatic carbon chain. The general formula is CnH2n(OH)2 or (CH2)n(OH)2

Global Warming, too

Gulf cleanup workers - ill from being around oil & dispersant  *

It only takes a 'whiff' of the chemical vapors to cause serious exposure.

by mid July, 2010 Deep Horizon website reports 1.8 million gallons of dispersant have been sprayed from airplanes.

When sick workers go home, they will expose their families 'second hand'

The Obama administration has ordered BP to use a less toxic form of chemical dispersant to break up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The decision, first reported in the Washington Post, comes only hours after Congress heard devastating testimony from BP executives and scientists on the high toxicity of two forms of Corexit, and their relative ineffectiveness against the type of crude now polluting the Gulf. The two versions of the chemical being used on the spill are banned in the UK because they are damaging to sealife.

The Washington Post reported this morning (May 10, 2010) that the Environmental Protection Agency has given the oil company 24 hours to choose a less toxic form of dispersant. Once approved by the EPA, BP will have 72 hours to deploy the new chemicals.
