Musk Ox Hunt
 Feb 2007

FYI on our musk ox hunt on Nunivak Island

A L A S K A

Sonja and I had a good time.  We found the weather to be cold.  Even though we had warm gear the wind and cold temperatures would set a chill in us after several hours.  We had planned on taking out many fox and scouring the island and selecting a nice trophy bull musk ox.  Problem was we got a weather day in Bethel and when we got to Nunivak the weather hadn't improve much.  We ended up going out (just Sonja and I, no guide or transporter) the first day and shooting one fox right away.

We tried to get to the South side of the island and got ¾ of the way before running up against a crater after driving in flat, no visibility light for an hour.  It would start to get dark soon so we bagged it for the day.  The next day we headed West and came up on 3 bull musk ox.  Two good trophies.  We selected one and shot it from about 100 yards.  The other larger bull thought that was pretty lame of the other to get shot so he butted him in the side and head a few times.  Weird?  I didn't know what to think of that.  One of the times the un shot bull rammed the shot bull hard, straight in the side.  It was a chest shot, so he only stayed up about half a minute.  The animals are truly amazing looking animals to me.  I am happy to have had the opportunity to hunt them but a little disappointed I didn't take more time to observe more and observe their behavior.  This was mainly due to poor weather and the possibility of getting completely weathered out and stuck in the village.

I am having a extended shoulder mount that I am excited to get back and the rear rug tanned.  I tried a some of the tenderloin and found it to be very good, tender and tasty.  I found after butchering the meat that musk ox, at least this one are very fatty animals.  Fat on the outside and fat in between the meat.  I expect it to turn out to be good eats though.

Check out the stats on cost and meat if your interested and see the attached pics (wish I had more but the camera was froze and I barely got these before it stopped working.)
