I strongly suspect glycol ether for causing the CFIDS, CFS, FM assortment of symptoms and that it also causes abnormal blood sugar, blood pressure, body temp (AI Hypothalamus) and extreme loss of vision / autoimmune issues in general

If anything causes eyes to burn and hurt, even contact lens solutions

COMPLETE® Multi-Purpose Solution Easy Rub® Formula

lenssolution.htm

 pg.htm

COMPLETE® Multi-Purpose Solution is a sterile, isotonic, buffered solution, preserved with polyhexamethylene biguanide (0.0001%), a phosphate buffer, Poloxamer 237, edetate disodium, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and purified water.  COMPLETE® Multi-Purpose Solution contains no chlorhexidine or thimerosal.

In the aftermath of Advanced Medical Optics' recall of its Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose solution, the company has introduced Complete Multi-Purpose Solution Easy Rub Formula for soft contact lenses. It combines the original Complete MPS formula with a rub-and-rinse regimen.

This formulation was originally approved in 2002 and has been sold under various brand names globally. It contains Poloxamer 237, four electrolytes and twice the level of preservative (EDTA) as Complete MoisturePlus. AMO states that the formulation has a proven track record of safety based on global use over several years and has not been linked to any of the recently reported multipurpose solution issues. AMO further claims that this formula combines a strong disinfection efficacy with comfort when used as directed. Call (866) 427-8477 or visit www.amo-inc.com.

The company states, "COMPLETE® MPS Easy Rub® Formula contains Poloxamer 237, an effective cleaner that is also gentle on the eyes. With 4 beneficial electrolytes"

My opinion, "Glycol ether such as mentioned in Poloxamer 237 should be suspect for causing loss of eyesight and a sign of exposure is the eyes burning and hurting.  What's wrong with the old fashioned ( old saline solution tablets that people can make themselves?  Newer isn't necessarily better.)"

What is stated as harmful for the most commonly used glycol ether, 2-butoxyethanol, is most probably true for the other glycol ethers as well.

Note loss of vision, loss of hearing, loss of sense of taste and smell & I've found that it is an autoimmune causing chemical

Should be suspect for the epidemic of cancers, autoimmune issues and birth defects:  memory loss, suicides, CNS depression ... the CFIDS, CFS, FM assortment of symptoms, the cause of 'gulf war syndrome,' the primary cause of harm to the Vietnam Vets, Not AO

It is unbelievable that warnings on glycol ethers are generally:  "wear airtight goggles, use in well ventilated area, wear chemical gloves" & that these eye solutions should be putting this type of chemical into one's eyes!

What is the preservative?  What is EDTA?

EDTA is a widely used acronym for the chemical compound ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (which has many other names, see Table). EDTA is a polyamino carboxylic acid with the formula [CH2N(CH2CO2H)2]2. This colourless, water-soluble solid is widely used to dissolve scale. Its usefulness arises because of its role as a chelating agent, i.e. its ability to "sequester" metal ions such as Ca2+ and Fe3+. After being bound by EDTA, metal ions remain in solution but exhibit diminished reactivity. EDTA is produced as several salts, notably disodium EDTA and calcium disodium EDTA.  jpg

A question:
Aren't you mixing what was a bacteria problem in the contact solution and blaming glycol?
As to the glycol ether harm in eye contact solutions, as usual, something besides the real chemical of harm is being touted or ignored altogether

In response to information received May 25, 2007 from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding eye infections from Acanthamoeba  Advanced Medical Optics (AMO)  recalled its Complete® MoisturePlus(TM) contact lens solutions.   By October, 2007 AMO had reformulated its multipurpose contact lens product and it is now available as COMPLETE ® MPS Easy Rub™, essentially the original formula without the moisturizing agent.  For FDA Preliminary Health Notification Click here.  For entire story and response from AMO click here.

This follows by about one year the recall of Bausch and Lomb's ReNu® with MoistureLoc for implications of causing Fusarium keratitis  (a type of fungal corneal infection)  and it follows by one  week AMO's offer to buy the Bausch and Lomb company.  See  Dr. Elman's All About Contact Lens Care Products.

my thoughts

COMPLETE ® MPS Easy Rub™ is worse than COMPLETE® MOISTUREPLUS(TM) MULTIPURPOSE SOLUTION. My husband used the latter 3 years ago and said that it always smarted when he put his contacts in.

Last week the eye doctor put his contacts in the easy rub version and it was a horrible burning in his eyes ... he could only leave the contacts in for one minute. Of course he didn't take the sample that the eye doctor offered him.

I recognize burning of eyes as a sign of glycol ether exposure, and sure enough that is there (This type of chemical will cause significant eyesight loss & MSDS info says to wear air tight goggles when around glycol ether. It should NEVER be put in anyone's eyes
