  I used this rug cleaner a few months ago.  As A owner of a Persian cat, a day or so after using this product he became lethargic was vomiting blood and bloody stools. I called the Spot Shot phone number on the can and was told that no way their product caused this illness and it was perfectly safe.  My vet bill was over $700.00  What should I do?         -      Nancy

If that was the only thing that was different than the normal routine, then it should be looked into further.
 
Of course they will say it in no way was their product.
They do have to give an Material Safety Data Sheet on this product to any company that asks and has 2 or more employees.  They do not have to give it to you;
 
however, you can often find such info on the internet.
Most aerosols do have similar chemicals to the one I suspect for being harmful
 
Note it has various other names, but the CAS number is the same
You see, the misting in the eyes is what is most harmful & an exposure to the propellant in their product, possibly

Somewhat better but constantly drinks lots of water and has gotten a nervous tick which seems to be not under his control his head jumps at any given time.

You are welcome.  The cat would likely have the same thing that the 'gulf war syndrome' symptoms are

 

That's  my opinion ... so the nervous 'tick' is possibly a nervous system damage
 
I would get the vet to look at the blood more closely.  Is there autoimmune hemolytic anemia?

 

The red blood cells too small ... ragged & beat up if it wasn't that long ago AND there should be some blood in urine.  That would be the easiest to test for. 
 
Maybe you can put an ad out and find someone else's pet or child who has been harmed by cleaning products with this component. ... especially aerosol sprays ... & go for a class action suit.  But you need 1 or 2 other people to stand up with  you ... or they might think it was  a 'freak thing' in just your case.
You will also be bringing attention to the issue.
 
Even little babies can be harmed by such chemicals.  What about the ones crawling around on the carpet ... or who get it in their eyes.
 
After you check out your pet or the autoimmune problem and the red blood cells dying off prematurely, I would recommend putting some glyconutrients in the cats water/milk.
 
I am hoping this might stop the autoimmune thing... & be a REAL HELP

But how strong?  Even 5% is too strong a concentration for home use, per one product developer.

I notice when I go to the products that have this & the compounded version   2-2-butoxyethanol, that the carpet cleaners and the oven cleaners are VERY strong Concentrations

Looks like up to 25% is 2-butoxyethanol

& up to 10% is propellant:  Liquefied Petroleum Gas

A report from Nancy on what happened to her Persian cat this year:
 
Writing to inform you that on 12-21-05 my persian cat had to be put to sleep.  Kidneys and liver were gone also difficulty breathing his poor little body filled with fluid.  Please do not use Spot Shot Rug Cleaner or any other cleaners containing this deadly poison.  God Bless all and have a healthy holiday.  Owner of the late Persian       Gizmo.   My heart is broken , he was only 8 years old.

I realize that people prefer the 'warm fuzzies' but not only is this is a what went wrong issues, but also a right now issue.
 
The chemical I'm talking about is in many products and has been so for 3/4s of a century.  It can harm our pets, our children of all ages, everyone actually.

Recently, my cat (not even two years old) was diagnosed with renal failure. After many tests (and more $2500 of vet bills), the docs are leaning toward a toxin as a cause... the only problem with this diagnosis is that my beautiful little gal is an indoor cat, and I own no plants (or cut flowers) at all. In fact, the only toxin she could possibly have been exposed to is SPOT SHOT... not by me, but by my cat sitter who was caring for my gal just before she became ill.

I now know that the main ingredient is ethylene glycol - which is known to be highly toxic to cats (at least in antifreeze). Have you heard of cats developing kidney failure after exposure to SPOT SHOT. I am still amazed that this product carries no warnings at all for pets and, in fact, advertises itself as great on pet stains.

Margaret. I had to let her go on Memorial Day. She had a rare protein leaking nephropathy that no one can quite explain, but was probably not due to spotshot.

With that said, I will never have Spotshot in my house again.
