Subject: Karachi Oil Spill

In karachi harbour an oil spill has taken place this week. The port authorities are using Corexit 9500 and 9527 to clean up the mess. We are a citizens group who is concerned about the health of our people as well as the environment. What can you tell us about the effects of this chemical. Is this the best strategy?
Please respond urgently as we have a meeting with the General Manager of the port authority tomorrow and want to be able to say the right things to him. Let me know if you need further information.
Regards,
Kamyla

You must stop them
This is very harmful

It didn't make 'sense' to use during the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup.  Why would you want to use it?  http://www.valdezlink.com/corexit/pages/corexit_8-15-89.htm

http://www.valdezlink.com/scenario.htm  (What workers or people exposed start to notice)

I believe it is the cause of much harm to many, many Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup workers - all 1000 bioremediation workers

Please keep me posted

Best thing to do ... is to scoop up the oil

How did you find my information?

What does Corexit do?

(Same as Inipol EAP 22 - with too much 2-butoxyethanol)

Our Exxon Valdez oil spill workers were the first "Gulf War Syndrome" victims - Looking back & forward

If you can't stop them

from using harmful chemical 'surfactant' dispersants,

then suggest:

Exxon men be along with anyone using their Corexit

... they will NOT

Are the people protected who 'touch' the chemicals?
www.valdezlink.com/ppe.htm

Tell Exxon you will monitor the health

of the workers & people who later frequent the beaches:

test blood and urine before and after ... monitor for 10 years.

Then you will have the proof of the harm done to your area;

to your people  (Ask workers to look for these signs)

What Corexit does:  www.valdezlink.com/opinion.htm#danger   It has unsafe levels of 2-butoxyethanol.  These products, Corexit 9500 and Corexit 9527 are surfactants.... there is NO bioremediation going on.  What happened on our oil spill cleanup.  www.valdezlink.com/1989photos.htm

Crude oil should be avoided - fumes from oil have benzene which can cause aplastic anemia.  One Valdez man only had one week's exposure to crude oil of the Exxon Valdez oil spill & later died of aplastic anemia  http://www.valdezlink.com/example.htm  Post warning signs to your people to stay away from crude oil fumes!

One woman only worked 6 months in the 2nd year... beaches that had been sprayed with chemicals containing 2-butoxyethanol.  She now has a weakened immune system which caused rheumatoid arthritis.  A friend that worked also...  digging in the dirt for deep down oil, & polishing the rocks with absorbent pads had a daughter born who at age 9 was also diagnosed with the same rheumatoid arthritis.  The 2-butoxyethanol must have still been there, as at 4 degrees centigrade - it doesn't disperse or biodegrade even.

Do not let young people volunteer... ban them from helping.  Or anyone who wants to have children.

Chemicals like those Exxon owns will do more harm that good.

They are NO GOOD

Exxon experimented on the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup.

Don't let them experiment on you!

So... what went wrong?  *

Never the same again

Exxon doesn't care about your environment or your people.

How much money would you have to pay them to get them to take their poison back

and GO HOME?

Thank you for all your information which has been really useful for us to better understand the extent of the problem we are facing. Would appreciate your help on the following queries as well:

1) Since the harbour is located in a densely populated area can you let us know the effects of vaporization of the crude oil as well as the chemicals for dispersants used on the health of the general population.
2) Is the ability to smell the fumes an appropriate assessment of whether contamination is occurring?
3) The dispersants are being applied through planes. What effect can this have on surrounding populations?
4) Due to strong winds and rough seas the smell of the oil can be smelt in the city. What health hazards does this pose?

Once again thanks for all your support.

So were you unable to stop the use of chemicals?
I can pass your info on to the citizen's group here

I think you might have to be closer to the oil fumes for them to affect you;
but please tell people to stay as far away from the oil and the chemicals as possible.

I'm not an expert; I only want to know, as you want to know,
and have talked to a lot of workers & read a lot of information

I did add more info on this page... do you want your e-mail listed there,
or not to be shown?  Someone could send you information directly if you leave it.

I am also asking people to pray for you and this situation

Still continue to read up on the topic, so you will be able to share information with your people more easily.
Are the pilots & workers in the plane willing to take part in a study of their health?
They will probably be health damaged from it too.  Stuff they would notice, if so:  www.valdezlink.com/scenario.htm

You expressed your concern; you have done your part.
Maybe you can keep a few young people from 'volunteering;' they are so idealistic you know.
This is what happened to Robin who took care of the aborted baby seals
www.valdezlink.com/eyes.htm  Since she had her spleen and pancreas removed on May 5, 2003 at a Midwestern MAYO clinic , I haven't heard from her.  It would be a risky operation in that her immune system was weakened.

I am looking for more workers of the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup, so we can prove
what happened to them... & that chemicals made a bad situation worse,
sorry to say.

How do they know that the coughing/throwing up was from the oil?
What about the dispersants?  Do you know which?

Subject: Karachi oil spill cleanup status? Dispersants Harmful

Dispersants are thought to be more harmful than the oil itself. The coughing and throwing up mentioned in your article 8/23/03 - Oil spill in Karachi threatens wildlife and health - COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY Corexit 9527 VERY TOXIC http://www.valdezlink.com/doc_gen.htm

Sadly, sometimes you can't fix everything; and the cure is worse than the problem http://www.valdezlink.com/learned.htm

The people that handled the dispersants and those who felt their 'eyes burning' should definitely be health monitored and maybe you will have something to contribute to future generations. http://www.valdezlink.com/patient_intake_chart.htm

I believe the 'model' Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup was actually a 'botched' cleanup. http://www.valdezlink.com/req_reply.htm

Realize, however, that you are up against the Chemical Industry!
