Subject  US Navy 1985-1988

I was on the USS Mobile LKA 115 from 12-85 to 4-1988.   I was a Boatswains Mate and we used JP 5 to clean and maintain the cable wire of the winches on our ship.   We would lay the wire out on deck and run the wire through a 50 gallon drum cut in half and laying down on its side.  I sometimes washed the grease off of my arms and hands with the JP5 and so did other deck seaman. We used this to clean the decks sometimes also using our hands.  I experienced pain in my joints and other problems while in service.    I've always had a feeling of fatigue, in 1990 one of my children had a birth defect. I was treated by the VA just after discharge for the depression and they called it a personality disorder.   I've now developed osteo-arthritis and had surgery on my spine for degenerative disk syndrome.   My eyesight is also bad...developed caritoconis ( hope that's spelled correctly).  I developed strange rashes on my legs like dry skin but with poison like bumps that look like poison oak but its not.    Could JP5 be the cause of some of my symptoms?  Is this the same thing as 2-butoxyethanol?

I would never have thought of Jet fuel, except that a military man said he came down with the 'gulf war syndrome' type symptoms in 1985 ... and he kept coming back to jet fuel.  What did I think of jet fuel?

Well, up until then (about 2 years ago now)  I hadn't given it any thought.

I do think that JP-5 contains something along the lines of 2-butoxyethanol based on the warnings given for JP-5 and also #s 2,3,4,5,6 ... are labeled as pesticides.

2-butoxyethanol is a pesticide, it is a solvent and it is a poison

It is the chemical exposure that 'gulf war syndrome' vets have in common with the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup workers

I suspect that the fatigue, if it is from this chemical, would be autoimmune hemolytic anemia ... check some of these things

In my opinion it causes CFIDS whether in the military or for civilians. More on 'the fatigueLOOK at the Red blood cells

Can you find anyone else who did the same job as you ... for about the same amount of time?  what is their health like, and that of their children.  This is a teratogen chemical and can cause birth defects.

You could easily get exposed to this chemical today ... so please avoid it.

I think the best help ... are glyconutrient food supplements.  They are becoming recognized as a help, too  (Bob's comments)

I e-mailed quite a few agencies today & shared that something else is always getting the blame for what 2-butoxyethanol does.  They say it has been in widespread use since the 1930s ... I believe we need another criteria for disability approval.  But those harmed have the proof, and as you know, this chemical has been 'hiding out'

A serious exposure looks like the FLU

The fatigue is the provable harm, but hard to find.

Share this with your doctor. Could the ailment you are sharing be considered for 2-butoxyethanol harm? Is the pattern there?

I also wrote to 'Cisero' -
I hope he gets the e-mail - and looks at it

'Cisero' comments on ketones being elevated (40+)  I noticed another man who I suspected as being seriously exposed to 2-butoxyethanol .... who's doctor noted that the ketones were small.  Would that mean they are immature or dying off and being replaced so quickly that they never get to be mature? or full sized?

I think something like that is happened with the red blood cells.  People report they are small-sized
