The average car mechanic IS at risk, as are painters & those who clean up oil spills around the country; even housewives.

The most important protective equipment is the airtight goggles - cost about $15 at the auto parts store

OSHA did reopen this issue for the benefit of 46,000 auto workers. I have wondered what brought this to their attention and what they found out? (I suspect it is from the painting of cars, the mechanical work, and the cleaning products used)

What I'm talking about is in break fluid, break free; its antifreeze with butyl ether in it

Dow Chemical calls it by their trade name, butyl cellusolve: <6% strong in Simple Green What happened to Audrey's husband is scary; plus I've heard some others just with that 'non toxic' cleanup product (based on dilution of 30 times or a capful in 1/2 gallon of water.

CD2 Engine Tuneup has up to 20% 2-butoxyethanol (5% is not safe for ordinary use)

What is the civilian name for 'gulf war syndrome?' and is there a cure?

Break Up Floor Stripper 10-50% 2-butoxyethanol

Westleys Glass Cleaner 5-50%

this is an example of the compounded version of 2-butoxyethanol: 2-2-butoxyethanol or diethylene glycol monobutyl ether Wagner Premium Brake Fluid which has 10-20% strength (probably 2% is the OK concentration) so don't get vapors of that in your eyes if you value your quality of life

Chills?

Military since the late 1930's could have the 'gulf war syndrome' CFS or CFIDS symptoms

We can lobby Congress to ban 2-butoxyethanol & diethylene glycol monobutyl ether chemicals

It is a chemical of harm to the gulf war syndrome vets ... but it has not been studied. They say that no 2 gulf war vets 'look the same' and doctors are very frustrated ... some don't even believe there is such a thing as 'gulf war illness'

Well, I say to you, that the fatigue will all look the same; if there is enough in the medical records, even if dead ... the harm of this chemical can be pinpointed: there will be blood in urine early on & for many years later ... and there will be a drop in the red blood cell counts over time: the red blood cells will also be immature red blood cells. Those harmed will be found to have acquired autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Doctors don't check for it, because the hemoglobin and the hematocrit don't drop until years later; they don't expect it to be there; and therefore they don't check for it.

Studies do need to be done

A good article
Why 2-butoxyethanol needs to be considered
along with other sources of harm for the 'gulf war syndrome' troops
(then & now) ... and the public, too, of course

We can thank the 'gulf war syndrome' troops for bringing this to our attention

It was also on the TV news January, 2005  - that eating meat is not healthy for your heart? ... eating too many red and processed meats raises a person's risk for colorectal cancer by up to 50%

I find the LA times is a very good source.

They were one of the few that wrote about the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup workers. Turns out 2-butoxyethanol, in my opinion was more hazardous than the oil for many people then and now

This is their article on that 11-7-01, if you're interested (emphasis mine)
It is considered a classic 'benchmark' article

This chemical exposure can cause heart attacks, too, but it isn't blamed for them.

Pre-screen possibility - Would a doctor be interested?

Just wondering, how many have high or low blood sugar?

Should this chemical be considered for CFS, CFIDS or autoimmune hemolytic anemia?

If a doctor would like me to screen/interview a patient for possible exposure to 2-butoxyethanol, I am willing to do so.  What symptoms & exposures would be part of its pattern of harm?
