Reoccurring stones every 3 months

Hello, I am new to the board and thought I would introduce myself. I am 32 and was diagnosed with a staghorn stone on Jan. 23, 2003. This stone was expanding my right kidney and causing a lot of infections that no one bothered to look into why I was getting them. I also had a stone in my left kidney. Anyways, they ended up doing a PCN, where they inserted three tubes into my right kidney through my back. These tubes remained in me for almost 5 months. After 3 surgeries using the tubes and 3 lithotripsies, they considered me stone free. That was in May 2003, by June I had numerous stones in both kidneys and went through more lithos and an uteroscopy. This has been the deal ever since approximately ever 3 months. All the tests come back normal and they have no idea what to do for me. They are also saying that they don't see how I can be in pain when the stones are not always obstructing the kidney. I decided to see a Nephrologist and he referred me back to my Urologist because he saw all the signs of more stones. I have gotten to the point that I don't want to see any doctors, because no matter what they have me taking or doing nothing works. I also can not pass the stones on my own no matter how much I drink, I even have my husband pound on my kidneys like the doctor said to but no luck. My last surgery was Dec. 19 and guess what the stones are back already. I sorry this sounds like I am complaining, that is not my intent. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know, because I feel like the doctors have given up because I am not a textbook case. The only thing that I can think of is that this is possibly genetic, because my great-aunt dealt with stones like this.

Thanks and good luck to everyone.

Shannon

P.S. The staghorn was 25% struvite and 75% calcium oxalate. They have not tested any other stones.

Hi Shannon, That is good you are working on quiting smoking. Congrates. That is great. I never smoked much. I know it is hard to stop. Yes, we had a good Easter. It was a lovely day that day here. Now it has been raining everyday. I hope it lets up some.
I was pain free yesterday. That was a miracle. I hope it stays that way. It got pretty bad on Monday. I am starting to think possible this is my IBS. I haven't had it act like this ever. If so not sure even what has caused it. It sure has felt like a kidney stone or sand. I still think though more than likely it is the left kidney but maybe I passed some sand. I was so thankful it didn't hurt yesterday. Glad you are doing ok. Hugs, Polly

Another cause of Kidney Stones - Metabolic

A young many in our town had a kidney stone recently. He didn't give any thought to having been in and around the cleanup chemicals of the Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup in 1989; but I've learned that just the mist in the air can affect people.

It appears there is a cause of kidney stones that would fit the pattern of what 2-butoxyethanol does to people. (
missing link)

Just wondering, do you have fatigue and other health ailments too? If so, do you remember when the started and what you were doing then?

"The kidneys produce hormones that
help build strong bones
and
help form red blood cells.

Urinary tract infections, kidney disorders such as cystic kidney diseases,
and metabolic disorders

such as hyperparathyroidism are also linked to stone formation.
"

This chemical causes endocrine disruption all by itself and in addition it targets the kidneys and liver anyway. Maybe have the doctor most interested consult with those who are expert in chemical harm - like a toxicologist (?) I don't really know who can or will help; doctors don't seem to find what's wrong - but when they do, the flood gates will open and everyone will be getting such.

Ask for a 'retic' ratio & for comments on the size and shape of the red blood cells. This is the first damage of this chemical & it would underlie all other symptoms that come along. Actually a hematologist & endocrinologist might be the most help. Could you be referred?
