World Wide Web Health Awards recognizes nutrition science site for second time

The World Wide Web Health Awards is a program that recognizes the best health-related Web sites for consumers and professionals. The program is held twice a year ? spring and fall ? with the goal of providing a "seal of quality" for electronic health information. This spring, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit awards were selected from a field of approximately 300 entries, and GlycoScience.org was awarded a silver medal as a excellent educational Web site.

I am thrilled and honored that we have been recognized by the World Wide Web Health Awards for our science team’s hard work, said Mannatech Chairman and CEO Sam Caster. The fact that this is our second award validates our long term commitment to excellence in health education.

The World Wide Web Health Awards is organized by the Health Information Resource Center (HIRC), a national clearinghouse for consumer health information programs and materials. These Web-based health awards are an extension of the HIRC's nine-year old National Health Information Awards (NHIA), the largest program of its kind in the United States. Last year, there were nearly 1,000 NHIA entries from hundreds of organizations.

To ensure equal review of all sites at the same time, a panel of international health information and internet experts reviewed all entries during a five to six week period. They judged entries based on accuracy, success in reaching the targeted audience and overall quality. In the fall of 2001, GlycoScience.org won a Merit Award from the same organization. GlycoScience Web Site Receives
International HON Seal

COPPELL, TX (May 17, 2001) - GlycoScience.org, nutrition science Web site, has met the stringent criteria for accreditation as a Health on the Net (HON) Foundation Web site and will display the respected HON seal. HON is an international not-for- profit foundation devoted to promoting high quality Web sites that disseminate health information.

"Health On The Net has provided leadership in setting ethical standards for Web site developers and is one of the first and most respected portals to medical information on the Internet," according to Eileen Vennum, Vice President of GlycoScience Information. "Visitors to the HON site (www.hon.ch) can access the MedHunt search engine to be linked to health-related Web sites, including GlycoScience.org."

"From its inception, the staff at GlycoScience.org has been devoted to providing a high quality, science-based Web site consolidating information about nutrition, especially glyconutritionals, that cannot be found elsewhere," said Vennum. "The HON seal tells the world, particularly healthcare providers and scientists, that GlycoScience.org is committed to providing reliable, substantive information."

HON was established in 1995 as a not-for-profit, international Swiss organization by such worldwide notables as heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey as well as representatives from the World Health Organization and the National Library of Medicine. This group created a permanent body that would guide consumers or non-medical users and medical practitioners to useful and reliable online medical and health information.

GlycoScience.com Has Once Again Received An Award!
By Jane Ramberg

GlycoScience.org has received a merit award from the World Wide Web Health Awards as an excellent Health Promotion/Disease & Injury Prevention web site for fall 2001. This award was established by the Health Information Resource Center (HIRC), a national clearinghouse for consumer health programs and materials. Because there are more than 15,000 health- related web sites, the HIRC has recognized the need to offer guidance to consumers who may feel lost in a sea of health information.

The World Wide Web Health Award seal provides reassurance that a web site has been approved by a panel of judges who evaluate web sites according to specific selection criteria. These criteria include an assessment of content ("Is the information credible/informative?", "Is the information appropriate for the target audience?", and "Is the site's sponsor clearly identified?") and creative format ("Is the site layout and navigation user-friendly?", and "Is the health information message(s) clear and consistent?").

Twenty-six web sites received awards in this category and only 3 of these (including GlycoScience.org) were sponsored by the private sector. The remaining sites were sponsored by professional societies, community organizations, educational institutions, governmental agencies, and health care systems. GlycoScience.com is in good company: other winners include sites sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Mayo Clinic!
