Dear Mr. Prince:

What is there about making moulds in a Glass Foundry that is hazardous?

I heard of a man who worked in the Alton, IL plant, and was buried yesterday from cancer.

It was not an easy cancer to detect; apparently at first he was told it was benign & it was the Barnes hospital that had a special machine that can detect 1ml of cancer that found he had cancer all thru his body.

All the others that worked in the mould portion of the factory have died of cancers, too; a couple of them with leukemia.

Since he worked there the plant has been moved to south Georgia as labor is cheaper there.

Margaret

This website talks about forms made of iron and graphite

& says:

Dalles may be set in special epoxy resins, iron or wood frames

Other Questions to ask:

I heard that those who make forms for glass are the better paid workers in a glass foundry.

  • How are forms made?
  • What does the job entail?

Stanton Auctions will be conducting an auction of nearly 500 vintage glass making moulds including pressed, blown and cup plates on the site of the world famous Pairpoint Crystal Company in Sagamore, Mass on October 4, 2003
