Kidney Disorders Protein in Urine

Punchy 8/03

I recently had a 24 hour that showed I had an unbalance of creatine and protein in my urine. My doc said that it was not to be too worried about right now. I suffer from anxiety /panic attacks and my blood pressure can fly in an instant. Does anyone know the long term effects of protein in the urine or what it means? Should I get a second opinion from a Urologist (sp?).

I have had a mild pain in my lower left back for about 2 years now. Doc says it is too close to the skin to be Kidney related. I am currently taking Inderal to keep my BP @ 130 /80.

I don't know what to do or what to think here. Can I live a normal life with a kidney that is showing protein in the urine? Can this heal? How soon will it lead to other terrible things Dialysis etc...

Thank you in advance.

How high is the Creatinine and protein?
A Urologist or Nephrologist (better) should recommend the following workup: Blood pressure check, Diabetes screen, urinalysis (any protein or blood?), 24 hour urine test for creatine clearance (more accurate assessment of kidney function if done properly), and protein excretion.
Don't delay.

someone with a kidney disorder and/or HBPress. should stop smoking, stop all alcohol and get on a STRICT weight controlling diet that is not very high protein. A dietician familiar with renal disorders is almost a necessity

Hey everyone! How are you doing? You find that in a nephrology rotation, proteinuria is something that is VERY common with renal disease. There are a number of different conditions that can cause protein in the urine. The first step is to also find out if there is blood in the urine, and exactly how much urine there is.

First question for you, why did the doctor do a 24-urine protein test? Have you had any problems with swelling around your body?

It also depends on how much protein is in the urine. If you have under say a gram a day, then it's not really that much of a problem and can probably just be treated with an ACE inhibitor. Someone mentioned diabetes before...that's a very valid point....do you have diabetes? That could be another reason the doctor did a 24-hour urine protein because (s)he was looking for something called microalbuminuria...i.e. small amounts of protein in the urine. This is a sign that your kidneys are starting to "hyperfiltrate", and if left alone, will progress to renal failure.

Can you fill us on on a few things?

Do you have any medical history?
Do you know how MUCH protein was found in your 24 hr urine collection?
Was there any blood found in the urine?
Are you having problems with swelling, especially at the ankles or around the eyes?
Any history of kidney disease in your family?

a urine tests doesn't test the actual function of your kidney (as in it will not tell you your creatnine level which is the true test of kidney function and is determined through a blood test) but it tells you how well your kidney is filtering your urine.

are you passing urine still and is it painful? Have you noticed any blood in your urine? Is there any history of renal disease in your family? Normally renal problems would present with lethargy, loin pain rather than back pain, feeling sick.

has your doc done test for renal function such as Creatinnine, Urea, Potassium and such like? Have you had a 24 hour urine collection done? If not, perhaps you should ask about this to eliminate any kidney problems.

Do you have an actual inflammatory condition of your joints or not? If you did, a blood test would normally show a raised ESR level, showing that you have some inflammation in your body. If it is aching in your muscles, could you possibly have something such as ME? Worth exploring with your doc and getting more renal specific tests done just to ensure that you kidneys are working ok.

- Sarah - I used to live and work as a renal RN in London before relocating to Boston.

PS  -  do more blood tests that are renal specific for Creatinnine, Urea, Potassium, Sodium, Calcium and all the electrolytes. A biochemistry profile should sort this. You need to tell him about these pains, as inflammation can affect the workings of the kidneys as inflammation can affect the renal arteries and veins.

Rocco Go to a kidney specialist (Nephrologist) and get a blood test for kidney function

Do you know any nephrologist group that would be interested in studying
kidney damage from the chemical 2-butoxyethanol?

Dear Margaret, Thank you for your email.  I am sorry, but I do not have the specific information you requested.

OK,  but maybe you could 'informally' ask that of those who are in your group,

The best information on what this chemical does is
And since it targets the liver and kidney and since there are so many people in our nation affected

This is 'generically' what it does

the nephrologists have been seening these so harmed for many years.  It will become pandemic

I believe the military today, are as much at risk for 'gulf war syndrome' & ultimate kidney problems, too,
as those of 1990-1991  www.valdezlink.com/can_you_help.htm

Many scientific studies are 'skewed' because they are dealing with secondary symptoms of this chemicals harm and 'chalking' up the tally on the secondary symptoms

So, if you know a doctor or legislator interested in this, could you forward this query to them? Thank you so very much
