"My father worked on the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill cleanup.
He was diagnosed with sarcoidosis in 1993 - VERY RARE
(It's a tar type substance in his lungs). Doctors couldn't figure out how he got it, though.
He died in l995 at 52."
There are a number of people who are quite ill, close to death with advanced diabetes, kidney failure & needing blood transfusions. Likely the doctors who don't specialize in Occupational Health
may not have considered chemical poisoning as the cause.
Would that alter the method of treatment?
Some exposed to the oil only, some to the oil and chemicals,
some only to the chemicals... such as longshoremen.
There was also an incinerator for the oil on a barge in the sound. Sometimes the oil was mixed with chemicals; what reactions are there when chemicals are heated & mixed with other compounds? Sometimes it didn't burn right. I heard that there were health problems for those workers.
