As we approach the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, we will all look back in remembrance to terrifying images, amazing stories and a nation that refused to be brought to its knees. As the family and friends of Todd Beamer, one of the heroes of Flight 93, the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, we mourned the loss of a wonderful human being that day.

But we refused to let it be the end of Todd's life. In fact, it had just begun.

That's why we established the Todd M. Beamer Foundation – to carry on his legacy of character, faith and courage.

Soon after Sept. 11, we recognized that children are often the forgotten victims of trauma. And that the effects of trauma on children run much deeper than we could ever imagine.

To that end, the Todd M. Beamer Foundation focuses on the future – helping not just the children who lost a parent on Sept. 11, but all children who have been affected by family trauma.

The mission of the Todd M. Beamer Foundation is to equip children experiencing family trauma to make heroic choices every day.

The legacy of "Let's roll"
On Sept. 11, 2001, Todd Beamer and a group of determined passengers helped prevent the fourth terrorist attack on the United States by taking over United Airlines Flight 93. After completing a 15-minute phone call with a GTE operator, Todd, who left the line open, was heard saying, "Are you ready? OK. Let's roll!" Not long after, the plane crashed in a rural Pennsylvania field, killing everyone aboard. It is unknown how many lives were saved by these everyday heroes.
