I had a child in 1994, her father is a gulf war vet. She has had
several medical problems since she has been born. I am no longer
with her father and he refuses to believe any of them could be
related to the gulf war. She was conceived about one year after
he returned. I was later told that the soldiers were told not to
have children for at least five years. She has severe asthma,
allergies, a heart murmur, stomach and gastrointestinal
problems, ADHD, and she is constantly sick. I would like to find
out more info on children born to gulf war vets. Could someone
please help me and point me in the right direction.
Thank you

Dear Shannon...
For heaven's sake, please get your child tested as part of
the Gulf War Registry. The information you need is as follows
(just click on the link)...
http://www.va.gov/health/environ/help.htm
I want to also emphasize that it is my understanding that your
husband does NOT need to cooperate for you to get help for your
child. If I'm mistaken about this, please jot me a line about it
because I've relayed the information on to the responsible
people to help your daughter. Furthermore, once your child
starts participating in the Gulf War Registry medical
examination, if she becomes ill, the V.A. can (but isn't
required to) treat your child's illnesses. Treatment incidental
to such a medical exam is authorized by law at 38 USC Section
1711(a), and I've provided a link to that law as well below...
www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/38/1711.html
If you are in a financial pinch, please tell the V.A.'s medical
staff about your financial situation and that you need to have
your daughter made part of the Gulf War Registry in order to
find out what's been ailing her. I strongly suggest (if you have
the capability to do so) that you print these out and take those
with you to any examination of your child.
One last thing...if the V.A. does treat your child incidental
to this medical exam, and they screw up, your daughter is
entitled to lifetime medical benefits under 38 USC Section
1151(b). Because they know this every bit as much as I do, I
would imagine they'll be very helpful and very cautious. Though
I hope you don't need the information, I've linked to that law
below as well...
www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/38/1151.html
You may want to emphasize to your husband that he's not the
immediate issue. It is your daughter who needs the help and
whether he thinks it's related to the Gulf War or not, you just
want to do what's in your daughter's best interests by finding
out for sure. If he's concerned that somehow he'll be found
liable for giving her Gulf War Syndrome, please let him know
that he is immune from any civil liability (i.e., he couldn't be
sued). That may bring him around.
Good Luck, God Bless, and Best wishes,

Dear Shannon:
One other thing I forgot to mention. Though it is a
long-shot, please consider filing a claim against Iraq for your
child's healthcare problems. The forms to start that process can
be found via the following link...
www.gulflink.org/claim.doc
Again, I cannot overemphasize that if your husband is worried
that he could get sued for your daughter's ailments, please tell
him that is quite impossible. The law, at 10 USC Section 2733,
gives all former soldiers, sailors, and airmen of war immunity
against that kind of thing. Even if it didn't, as you will see
from reading the law, the statutes of limitations for suing for
such a thing have passed. Here's the law if he'd like to see
this for himself...
www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/10/2733.html
Again, I wish you and your daughter the very best and hope these
tidbits of info can help you. You are in my prayers.
Kindest regards,
Shakey

Dear Shannon:
I have forwarded your request on to the proper officials.
They should be responding to you by e-mail. If there is any way
they can assist you, they will. I hope this helps.
God Bless,
Shakey

HI SHANNAN
I'm Mark sorry to hear about your child. I know pretty much
what you are going through. I have two little girls my self, who
i believe are sick because of me. It hurts see them when they are
having the same problems as me. When they are ill and i see the
tears that come out of their eye's, because there bone's are
aching, it urks me. this is why i want to be a part of this
national meeting.
I feel like the people who are here on this post are family. and
this is something the gov can't take away.Your child is a gift
from god, Only to say that alot of us who want to have a baby
can't and this is some of the things, that has been taken from
us,beside's our health. if only your ex who is stubborn to believe
could see
that it is not his fault but the gov. I will pray for him that
god may open his eye's and i will pray for you and your child.
for you i will prey that god may give you strength and courage
(please excuse my spelling i could not find the word in
the dictionary. my prayers go out to you and your family.
Mark A
ps:these people here are good people and they will try to help
you as much as they can. i wish i could have wrote sooner but i
had to think on this for awhile.shakeylaw can help you alot so
trust him.

My son was born in 1998 with no left forearm or hand. Since the
war was long over and I had left the military in 1992, I did not
even consider the war as a possible cause.
I myself have developed asthma since the war but am otherwise in
very good health. I live in Germany so until a couple of months
ago when I got into the internet I had heard very little about
the 'Gulf War Illness'.
Over the last few months I have done some research into the
topic and am beginning to wonder if my service in the gulf war
may have caused my son's birth defect.
