Air Force Doctors Recognize Gulf War Syndrome

I went to my reserve drill this weekend and was advised by the Air Reserve Technician, that I was being classified as T-4, unfit for military duty because of a medical condition. That I was either going to have to fight like hell or I would receive a full medical retirement. I was relieved of duty and sent directly to the Flight Surgeon at David Grant Medical Center. There I sat for almost six hours waiting for doctors to review my now found military medical and V.A medical records. After reviewing both sets of records, I was advised that I had two disqualifying medical conditions for continued military service.

1]. Gulf War Syndrome and

2]. Asthma.

I was told that I would still be going through the DOD Gulf War Clinical Evaluation at the hospital. That I would have to go through two local medical boards and then the Air Force medical boards. That i was restricted from performing any active or reserve military service, period. The Art also told me that the Air Force did not want to assume liability for the Gulf War Syndrome and Asthma and that I should have never been let back in the service.

The medical section filled out an AF Form 348,[ Line of Duty Determination], the narrative reads as follows, " While activated during Desert Storm in Southwest Asia, dates Feb 91 to June 91, member received Anthrax vaccination and had adverse reactions, which included internal bleeding, headaches, shortness of breath and chest pain, also multiple rashes. Member was given PB tablets also at the time of Anthrax vaccination."

Well, this was both good and bad. Good that now even the military is recognizing GWS and connection to Southwest Asia service. Bad, because this was most likely my last day in uniform. On Sunday, I returned to my unit and armed up with a 9mm Bereta, provided weapons security during a Firearms training class for twenty students. Odd enough, the same LT.Col who made the medical decisions on my Gulf War Illness was in the class. So I asked him, " What do you think, am I going to be able to continue in the military?"

He said, " I hope so, but we have the medical boards to go through." My personal take, is that it's over. So I have to wait and see. Now if the Air Force disqualifies me because of Gulf War Syndrome and Asthma as result of service in Southwest Asia, How can the V.A then say, I don't rate a disability. The saga continues, see what we have to go through, we are all in this together. Stand tall, walk forward and salute the flag.

Note - he was teaching gun use;  does that mean cleaning guns, too - MORE than others?
