The Gulf War Syndromes

UT Southwestern researchers studied 249 members of a U.S. Navy reserve unit and found that up to one-fourth of them suffered symptoms that occur togetherm indicating a possible syndrome.


Syndrome 1. "Impaired Cognition"

Symptoms
  • Distractibility
  • Difficulty remembering
  • Depression
  • Middle and terminal insomnia
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Slurred speech
  • Confusion
  • Migraine-like headaches


Syndrome 2.* "Confusion-Ataxia"

Symptoms
  • Confusion and disorientation
  • Dizziness, imbalance and vertigo
  • Problems thinking and reasoning
  • Sexual impotence

 


Syndrome 3. "Arthro-Myo-Neuropathy"

Symptoms
  • Joint and muscle pains
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Tingling or numbness in hands
