12-21-03 Cisero - Thank you for your May 13, 2003 letter I'm hoping you are OK

I received an e-mail yesterday from someone who did the same job on a Navy ship that you did: aviation ordnance. He said, he too has the "Gulf War Syndrome" symptoms but even earlier. His search for answers keeps bringing him back to Navy Jet fuel. Come to find out, the warnings on the jet fuel resemble the 2-butoxyethanol ones I've heard before; maybe that's where the Corexit 9527 was used?

Note comparison Corexit 9527 MSDS at page bottom of this sample JP-4 Jet fuel MSDS.

There are known sources of 2-butoxyethanol and diethylene glycol monobutyl ether to Gulf War vets! pdf ... and what might be some unknown sources be? gun cleaners and degreasers; bug spray with those horrible warnings of Personal Protective Equipment Level IV; Navy jet fuels JP-3, JP-4, JP-5 and JP-6 declare pesticide ingredient USEPA/OPP PC Code: 063515 (This will affect military personnel before and after the Gulf War time period.)

I wish to share information, abbreviated, that 2 other Gulf War Discussion Forums are interested in. The most popular topic on Gulf War Help (Started by your Chad) is restated here, "How to find a doctor who's interested?" and the thread on Gulf War Vets

Proud Warriors declare "We Remember 9-11" and a human interest story Shared with me by a mom whose 2nd son in Iraq is returning to the States on Dec. 23!

And

May you each have a blessed Christmas!

To all Gulf War Vets with Gulf War Syndrome:

You say it couldn't be caused by just one thing!

But it could be something they don't expect it to be... like what is supposed to be safe in home cleaning products... Added to things that are used a LOT in the military, like pesticides, gun cleaner, jet fuel ... it can mean too much exposure to a chemical that DOES DO all the things 'gulf war syndrome' symptoms are.

I shared this with a military mom and nurse of a neurologist in early August. She said she read the studies, and that 2-butoxyethanol wasn't on the list. Who did I think I was anyway? (Well, I wasn't looking for the cause of Gulf War Syndrome, I just 'stumbled upon it.')

Not studied? That is precisely the problem. Something not expected to be harmful IS VERY HARMFUL with repeated use. AND as you will note from Cicero's May 13 comments, the NAVY has same symptoms for time periods other than those of Gulf War.

Here is some information to pass on & a couple of other forums with updated info.

To give you some background on why 2-butoxyethanol? & Facts to show you had some exposure.

Signature on profile:  Known as pesticides you were exposed to are 2-butoxyethanol and diethylene glycol monobutyl ether. Ask the Dept of Defense to look further; inventory all productions containing such, and limit exposure for TODAY's troops, as well. No appropriate protection is being worn for these chemicals (goggles are most important). They should be banned by the Legislature!
