Subject: Oil Spill Help!  Southern CA

Great.. I haven't looked for years for news because I was unsure of what I would find. Now I see what is being diagnosed and am in fear.  Now that I see a possible Desert Storm connection, I guess I must seek info now.  I was a Coast Guard beach monitor in the 1989-90 seasons.  After that I was Immediately sent to Saudi Arabia for a year in support of Desert Storm.  For ten years I have been to doctors with sometimes debilitating symptoms, and I do in fact have a "Undiagnosable" Infertility problem (zero sperm count, testosterone replacement therapy).  I have never connected the two, But I have never had answers. Due to my Military status at the time (and currently) I fear I must tread lightly, yet I have never had an answer on any of my medical problems. I am becoming upset now that I have read more. I have gone to some of the best specialists and edocrinologists in Southern California, spent thousands of dollars, and I am simply "unable to father children". But None of them can say why.

If there is anything I can answer or anything you feel I should do, Please let me know.

Oh, Thank you so much for writing.  I have been trying to locate those who may have been affected by the chemicals.

And of course we are looking for helps for you, too.

What page did you find?
What search did you do?

I have been working on this in earnest since June, 2002

Maybe you can also help others

I am only a student on this topic.
But was sad to see what could happen
& that the powers that be  - aren't helpful

It is my belief that there is a connection from July, 1989 to the present with too much exposure to 2-butoxyethanol added to the military since then.  Not too many people are paying much attention yet, as we need medical proof.  and many of these do not go to the doctors, and when they do, they don't get help, as the doctors don't study it.

So what have I got to loose by 'bull dogging it'

Thank you so much for checking into this and for being open minded.

Yes, I am speaking with a past Coast Guard Monitor (I'll look up his name in case you know him.)  He had been a skeptic, but seems more open now.  He asked about the heart beating rapidly, so I looked into that.  The more you share and ask questions, the more I am able to piece it together & hope others 'will take over'

I'm just 'treading water' so to speak.  There is a group of EVOS workers being considered for a lawsuit against Exxon.

I feel for you;  Having children is such a treasure.  No one should be deprived because of a job they took and trusting that the employer was watching out for you.

This can start to look pretty bleak,
but be encourage, Our God is still in the miracle working business.  Ask people to pray for you.

These are those I feel could be affected from their oil spill cleanup ... just being there

& this is the survey I roughed out for workers

Yes, I do remember Ferris, but in name only perhaps if we exchanged stories perhaps we would come to a remembrance.  The problem is, I am still in the Coast Guard as an auxiliarist with an Officer position. I am afraid of implicating the Coast Guard at this point, But I feel that I may have been a "Double Whammy" so to speak in that I spent almost two years in the Sound on the spill, and then half a year in Saudi for Desert Storm.  I have my notebook that has notes on when we were "bioremediating" and other daily activities and where they were happening. Please keep me updated if you know any more about that lawsuit. Years and years of "i dunno's" from doctors have got me frustrated.

How's Valdez these days? I miss it, lived there for a summer, and Cordova for the next. Spent half a year out in the Sound on the boats as well.  My wife wants to take a vacation and come up there some year.

Your log would be extremely valuable.
If  you have the 'package' of symptoms that are 2-butoxyethanol poisoning, you should consider sharing your info. I know of another person that is in the oil industry... an insider ... who asked to remain confidential; but she approached help with some of these & is said to be getting better.

Valdez?  Yes, here is a web page

& things to do at page bottom of

and we have a bed 'n breakfast
People from all over the world come
That's the best part
They give me info & I put it on web pages

Because of more than one exposure,

Does your health log indicate when certain changes occurred?
Hemolytic anemia is supposed to happen right away; and we can't find it.

& the NJ sheet also

PPS

the US Govt and military, too
are victims in this as well

Hoping the country will arise and require the EPA to remove

Inipol EAP 22 and Corexit from their OK to use list...

and to charge Exxon for the medical of every person injured.

AND to stop making profit on these chemicals

I even think the sea ice is melting more this past decade because of 2 non stop incinerators in Deadhorse and North Pole and the continued use of 'bioremediation' all these years at Prudhoe Bay.  I suppose you know how many more lives have been harmed when you add to that the entire military and the Australians for their 1995 oil cleanup and the Karachi one of this year.

I have a list of Coast Guard names, frequencies, a list of every vessel I encountered on the spill, VECO boats, LCM's, Someone was looking for a photo of the big berthing barge boat they had. I have it on a slide somewhere. I will go dig it all out and start taking a look for info.  Have a few pictures of that big boat that made it's own water, too. Was there for lunch a few times in the second year.

I'll start gathering all my stuff together and look it over carefully.

Very good; thank you.

If OK, I would like to share the pictures you have on the website, as it helps 'tell the story;

In looking thru the NJ Hazard info sheet (6pdf pages)
It states: p.2 Reproductive Hazard
2-butoxyEthanol may damage the testes (male reproductive glands).

I was Hospitalized after returning home within the same weekend from the spill. I had developed "heart palpitations" to an extent that others in the room could hear my heart beating.  It took a few days for it to go away.  I also remember leaving AK with A 104  deg fever that went undiagnosed by two doctors. One in Anchorage, and one at home.  They told me I had a "Russian Plainsman's Fever". that I had contracted in AK.  Could this have been the fever they attributed to close proximity with workers and our living conditions?.
I need to put a timeline together of all this stuff.

The Sterility is my greatest concern. With no visible or diagnosable cause, I am 100% Sterile. All the testicular functions are intact, even the proper trace chemicals and hormones are present (except for exceptionally low testosterone). The doctors just scratch their heads when the tests show a zero sperm count. They say it's unheard of. Low counts are in the millions. I am zero.
Thanks for the info, I'm going to become involved I believe.

PS

I believe this was an attack of Hemolytic Anemia, with fever. Pericarditis can be caused by the HA.  I had 104 fever leading to heart infection.  This may be what others are calling "heart palpitations"... I had Pericarditis diagnosed, but I don't know if the Anemia was diagnosed along with it.

11-5-03  I have the names of those Navy ships on scene.. I'll dig them up.

Margaret:  "I have another military man, who says he can find anything, also looking for the Navy ships assigned to EVOS work)  They are some of our workers, too"

Thanks for this information

It is your medical info ... yours and that of others

that will stop this harm from happening to others

and there are many others  www.valdezlink.com/hi.htm

and then on to figuring out what can be done; now that cause is identified
Could I share just this much...with the other 2 military comments?

Subject: Re: may I?
You can use the quote, but PLEASE never give my name or email out to anyone.  I am still in the CG.  This could be very sensitive.
The fever was always a big deal to me. Stewardesses were caring for me in the back of the plane.  I have horrible sinus trouble as well. Doctors have all said "Wow, you sure are closed up!" But they can find no allergic or any reason why.
You may already be aware of this, and I write this to encourage you.  The internet is changing the way things are done. In the past, the big guys, be it Gov't, Business, could hide whatever they want. Not any more.  Our communications will fill in the gaps of our own understandings, fill in the gaps of others. What will happen is that we WILL find the answers.  When the people themselves find one another, come together, the truth is undeniable.

I have been in the strangest mood for the last few days, seeing this great big circle close. Most of my heartache and troubles of the last decade are starting to fall into place like puzzle pieces.

www.valdezlink.com/puzzle.htm   (my web page)

I will do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of this, but beware! If I find the facts don't match up, I'll be the first to pull out. We must be SO very careful with our self- Diagnosis'.
yes, I can imagine how you feel -

this is a lot to 'dump' on you all at once.

We had a fill in pastor at our church, a military retired chaplain from Vietnam era, etc.

I said to him, after I had done most of my study some months back,

whether or not it was better not to know...

to which he replied,  "They would want to know"

So, the information is out there; and I can only hope that those who are harmed by this chemical,

regardless of the setting, will find the information and be helped by it.

Does some of this look familiar?
I had to type it myself & copy the pictures - it was one of the few things in public domain & of course OK for that

This picture look familiar?

That's funny. See all the pretty clean orange suits? They were not real Monitors, they were big wigs out for a look-see.  Real beach monitors have two or three "mustangs" (the suits) and they were all black with oil. A whole boat load of them at once? Real monitors traveled in twos at the most.

Keep up the good work!
-'Monitor'

Also, we beach monitors were not "traveling lookers" we were on the beach before the workers arrived, and left only after the last one was gone in the evening.  I was there more hours than the workers themselves.  My VECO girlfriend used to bring me boxed lunch because the CG didn't bother with lunches for us monitors.  I do miss her sometimes. I wonder what happened to her!

It may be important to find her - she could have health concerns, too.

Looks like those were DEC suits. http://www.valdezlink.com/valdez_evos_photos.htm#dec
I saw one on Steve Provant (he died of chronic lymphocyte leukemia... well actually from not regaining consciousness after gall bladder removal surgery.)  Swollen glands is a concern with many who ran into this chemical.  www.valdezlink.com/swollen.htm

Anyway, Mary does not believe that there is any connection between what Steve did and the hazards of the oil spill cleanup.  He was a chemist!  He suited up in the proper gear!

A sweet artist lady, also has CLL, & her condition is worsening, she doesn't weigh enough for the chemo she needs.
She worked the Valdez otter recover area;
Robin worked the baby seals out of Seward
I'm so sorry to hear you had that kind of exposure.

Maybe the Coast Guard will someday help to find you.
You would all have similar health problems

And as far as I know,
the Coast guard is still behind using these kind of dispersants

They don't know what it does to you

Thanks - the more of the story that is out there,
the more help we can get for people!

I think there is concern about it being in the well water at the Alyeska terminal new office building
But no one tests for this chemical... metals, etc you know

I've made enough 'stink'  www.valdezlink.com/req_reply.htm
that I am treading lightly here, http://www.valdezlink.com/test_water.htm
(I have learned more in general about testing for it in water, but haven't added it yet.)

The ABOVE  is NOT a posted web page - until 4-15-06

States a Gulf War Vet:

I served in swa with the Marine Corps from jan91-june91. after returning to the states, I had a few very severe migraine headaches that brought me to my knees. The headaches went away and I then started to have heart palpitations with a very high heart rate. I was placed in the hospital once for one week with the doctors being unable to explain why I was having the palpitations. I was recently given beta-blockers in a attempt to control it.

I have never been to the VA and the thought of this being related to my service in the gulf has crossed my mind. I really am uninformed about the symptoms of gws . has anyone here had similar problems and would the above symptoms be classified as as symptoms of gws? also in your opinion should I go to the va?

(Also for Buffalo... who wrote Aug 20)

The heart palpitations are a symptom of hemolytic anemia
Medications may hurt and not help; Maybe a transfusion of whole blood would be the most helpful. Your body needs more oxygen. (But this is a non medical opinion - based on study of this chemical & Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup workers & vets I have talked to)

have them check the ratio of mature to immature red blood cells AND have a lab tech look at the red blood cells under a microscope and comment.

Keep track of your own blood information - and ask the doctor to check some extra things, too

Helps for you to learn about 2-butoxyethanol

More Helps for your doctors

Headaches? Yes, that, too
I'm starting to think that is from having damage to the endocrine system... read on on this same web page. Again... I have gathered info, but am not giving medical advice.

Any sterility out there? Any birth defects?

Since July, 1989 2-butoxyethanol has been used too strongly in products the military has and many are today being exposed. The Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup workers were the first Gulf War Syndrome Victims: which includes many in the Navy at that time.

Please look at several lists here: http://www.valdezlink.com/lists.htm
and
Inventory what products the military uses that have 2-butoxyethanol & in what percentage - since July, 1989

Isn't this sad? - a Gulf War military:

October 05, 2002  Our son was in the gulf war from August 90 to April 91, since then he experienced rashes, head aches, and joint pain. He was a very strong young man, who was very active, body building etc. March 28, 2002 he called told us he found that he was diabetic, had been to the doctor the day before, the 28th was a Thursday. His fiancée took him to the hospital on Sunday evening at 8pm, his blood sugar was 1700, we did not know he was in the hospital (he didn't want to worry us, we live in Michigan, he was in Texas). The doctor call us at 2:30 in the morning, told us they did not think he would make it. He died Tues April 2, 2002. Autopsy showed an abscess in the pancreas, has anyone heard of a similar incident?

I am starting to think that whatever damage happens to the endocrine system (maybe the pituitary/liver/pancreas)

it causes instant diabetes.  I know a man who was fine before falling out of a car & injuring his head; he copes well, but would have been genius; and would have had NO diabetes, had it not been for his head injury.

Isn't this a sad story?
