Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

is a lethal blood-borne cancer of the immune system

a high tumor burden is considered greater than 500g

symptomatic:   including vital organ impairment and disfigurement

said Dr. Mark S. Kaminski. "These preliminary results are encouraging and demonstrate the promise of this therapy to be more effective and less toxic than traditional chemotherapy regimens.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a form of cancer that affects the blood and lymph tissues. According to statistics from the National Cancer Institute, approximately 270,000  people are afflicted with NHL in the United States alone. Of the total, the company estimates that approximately 140,000 people have low-grade or transformed low-grade disease. NHL currently is the sixth leading cause of death among cancers in the U.S. and has the second fastest growing mortality rate. There are approximately 54,000 new cases of NHL diagnosed each year.

In the past 14 years, physicians and molecular biologists have defined several new subtypes of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Mantle cell lymphoma

is one of these and comprises 5% of all Non-Hodgkins Lymphomas diagnosed in the United States

MICROSCOPIC APPEARANCE

Mantle cell lymphomas are characterized under the microscope by expansion of the mantle zone area of the lymph node with a homogeneous population of malignant small lymphoid cells with slightly irregular nuclear outlines and scant cytoplasm.

MCL Mantle cell lymphoma typically presents with disseminated involvement of multiple lymph node groups and infiltration of the bone marrow . It is most common in males over the age of 50.but there is an increasing number of cases among younger people of both sexes.

Hepatosplenomegaly and lymphocytosis are common (and may present a clinical picture mimicking chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Extranodal involvement is common in MCL, particularly gastrointestinal involvement

More Blood info http://mclresource.com/MCLAid/#Bl

Normal blood counts are difficult to state as they vary with the age and sex of the patient as well as where they live. Higher values are usually seen in people who live at higher elevations. The reference ranges for each test will be printed on the laboratory report form and will be specific to your locale. ___________________________________________

Understanding the Immune system  http://mclresource.com/MCLAid/#Im

All cancers are genetic malfunctions in cells. Usually the malfunction arises in a single cell, allowing it to proliferate uncontrollably. Often these malfunctions manifest themselves as one or many phenotypic flaws which allow cells to grow without regard to the usual inhibitions that normally regulate cell expansion. Cancer is often thought of in terms of tumors formed by cells proliferating in this manner. However, MCL can just as easily be defined as a population of defective lymphocytes that cannot function normally and yet are not able to die.

What causes MCL?  Interesting points here  http://mclresource.com/MCLAid/#Cs

Dr. Tsao advised physicians to "be attentive to the possibility of second cancers in patients with melanoma and lymphoma. A suspicious lymph node detected after melanoma may not necessarily be a melanoma recurrence, but rather, it may represent a lymphoma. Similarly, skin examinations are important for all lymphoma patients."
